Wiley Rein Hosts Thurgood Marshall Academy Law Day for 10th Consecutive Year
Today Wiley Rein hosts its 10th annual Summer Law Day for students from the Thurgood Marshall Academy, a DC public charter high school that focuses on law and government. During Wiley Rein’s decade-long partnership with Thurgood Marshall Academy, approximately 1,000 students have participated in the Law Day program.
About 20 Wiley Rein lawyers and summer associates will serve as faculty members for the nearly 100 ninth grade students scheduled to gather at the offices of Wiley Rein. The half-day workshop educates students on basic legal principles and includes a case study on contract law, a mock trial and a lunch program about careers in the law. The Law Day helps students hone critical thinking skills, develop public speaking techniques and practice how to respectfully respond in an argument.
Partner Laura A. Foggan, who is coordinating the Law Day said, “We are proud to be hosting students from Thurgood Marshall Academy for the 10th year in a row. It’s a pleasure to share our knowledge and experience with inspiring young individuals from the DC area, and we hope they enjoy the day as much as we do.”
Thurgood Marshall Academywas founded upon the belief—articulated by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall—that all children have the right to a first-class education and the opportunity to reach their full potential. As the District's first law-themed public charter high school, the academy's mission is to prepare students to succeed in college and to actively engage in our democratic society.
