Richard E. Wiley to Receive 2014 Lowry Mays Excellence in Broadcasting Award

Washington, DC — Wiley Rein Chairman Richard E. Wiley will receive the 2014 Lowry Mays Excellence in Broadcasting Award.  Named after Lowry Mays, the founder and chairman of Clear Channel Communications, the award honors and salutes individuals in broadcasting whose work “exemplifies innovation, community service, advocacy, and entrepreneurship.”  Mr. Wiley will be recognized during The Broadcasters Foundation of America Breakfast on Wednesday, April 9, at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas during the National Association of Broadcasters Show.

Mr. Wiley co-founded Wiley Rein in 1983 and leads the 80-attorney Communications Practice, the largest in the country.  As chairman, commissioner, and general counsel of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) during the 1970s, Mr. Wiley worked to foster competition and lessen regulation in communications.  He chaired the FCC’s Advisory Committee on Advanced Television Service from 1987 to 1995, a period that led to his being dubbed the “father of high-definition television.”

Recently, Mr. Wiley was named one of the Library of American Broadcasting’s Giants of Broadcasting (2013) and honored with The American Lawyer's Lifetime Achiever Award (2012).  Last year, Mr. Wiley was recognized by the IRTS Foundation, formerly the International Radio and Television Society Foundation, as one of three media pacesetters “who inspire us to make a difference through mentoring.”  The National Association of Broadcasters honored Mr. Wiley with its Distinguished Service Award in 2002.
