Michael Toner Discusses Campaign Finance Reporting Error by Rep. Shuler's Campaign
Election Law & Government Ethics Practice co-chair Michael Toner was quoted commenting on Rep. Heath Shuler’s (D-NC) campaign’s failure to report $1 million in spending last year. The money wasn’t reported due to an error on the part of the company that helped to compile his campaign finance reports. Rep. Shuler’s campaign could face a fine due to the mistake. Mr. Toner said that “such a large error would likely result in an FEC investigation and a possible fine.” While the majority of campaign finance reporting errors involve contributions, Mr. Toner noted that “the Democratic National Committee agreed in 2007 to pay an $82,000 fine after the FEC found that it had improperly reported some expenditures.”
