Wiley Rein's Michael Toner Comments on Fundraising by Republican Group for 2012 Election
Election Law & Government Ethics Practice co-chair Michael Toner discussed the fundraising activities of a Republican-linked group in a September 2 Reuters article. The political committee American Crossroads has raised $25 million this year to fund ads criticizing President Obama. Due to recent court decisions such as Citizens United, groups like these can now raise unlimited cash to advocate for or against a political candidate. Mr. Toner said that "the Crossroads money will help the eventual Republican nominee keep pace with Obama's fundraising after weathering an expensive primary fight" and added that "those funds are going to be necessary to compete with record breaking funds raised by an incumbent president."
