Wiley Rein's Michael Toner Quoted in Article on Elizabeth Warren's Run for Senate and Her Harvard Connection
Wiley Rein Election Law & Government Ethics Practice co-chair Michael Toner was quoted in a September 20 article focused on Elizabeth Warren’s run for Senate and her connection to Harvard University. Ms. Warren—a law professor at Harvard—has recently entered the race to win a seat in the U.S. Senate. Her connection to the ivy league university could help her campaign, while others say she it could hinder her chances if voters see her as out-of-touch or elitist. Ms. Warren could also face legal and ethical issues for running for office while still a member of the school’s faculty. “Universities have nonprofit status, so they have to be careful,’’ Mr. Toner said. “They can’t endorse candidates. They certainly can’t underwrite them. And the candidate can’t state or imply something like ‘Harvard’s behind me,’’’ he concluded.
