Caleb Burns Quoted in Coverage of Nonprofit Linked to Trump Lawyers and Allies

The Daily Beast
March 15, 2021

Caleb P. Burns, partner in Wiley’s Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, provided commentary for a March 12 article in The Daily Beast about a nonprofit 501(c)(4) social welfare organization that plans to raise funds for activities including litigation.

Mr. Burns said the newly formed organization has a wide berth to operate, including supporting private legal efforts.

“The mission may not be so narrow that the primary beneficiary is a single private individual or discrete group. But a 501(c)(4) can advance its broader social welfare mission by engaging in activities that also benefit private parties,” Mr. Burns said. “Casework by a group supporting the indigent is a good example.”
