Caleb Burns Quoted in Coverage of Political Contributions from Legal Industry

Caleb P. Burns, partner in Wiley’s Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, provided commentary for a May 4 article in Law360 Pulse about political contributions from the legal industry.

“People in various industries are going to be politically active because politics can have an effect on their livelihood,” Mr. Burns said. “Significant political contributions from the legal industry could signal that lawyers may believe there are candidates who could very well affect the profession, either for good or bad.”

Many attorneys have contributed to candidates in the 2021 New York City mayoral election, according to the article.

“It’s no surprise that one of the factors they may be considering is which of the mayoral candidates are a better fit for the legal profession and, perhaps, the professional success of their clients,” Mr. Burns said. “You might think, ‘How do these candidates align with the legal industry and, relatedly, those of my clients? Because my clients’ well-being is going to reflect on my well-being.’”
