Michael Toner Discusses Legal Issues Associated With Wooing Convention Delegates
Michael E. Toner, co-chair of Wiley Rein’s Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, was quoted in an ABC News article about what GOP presidential candidates are legally allowed to offer delegates in exchange for votes.
According to the article, delegates can be offered a role as campaign surrogates or to help develop campaign platforms. Additionally, candidates are able to offer delegates “a role in the administration,” but it’s potentially problematic to offer delegates a specific federal job in exchange for a vote.
“The candidates will have broad latitude to cut political deals with delegates,” Mr. Toner said.
