Robert Walker Discusses Possibility of Revived Investigation into Paul Broun

Robert L. Walker, of counsel in Wiley Rein’s Election Law & Government Ethics Practice, was quoted in an article published yesterday in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution about a House Ethics Committee investigation of former Rep. Paul Broun that could be revived should he be elected this fall. Mr. Walker was also quoted in a similar article published in Roll Call.

According to the article, a rule stipulates that the House Ethics Committee has statute of limitations to investigate a sitting member of Congress that goes back six years. When Broun left Congress in 2014, the investigation into his alleged misuse of taxpayer funds died. If he’s elected in November, the Committee could choose to revive the investigation.

“If the committee thinks someone could be getting away with something, then I don’t think they’re going to let it happen,” Mr. Walker told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “The fact that someone leaves and comes back doesn’t wipe the slate clean. If they thought there was reason enough to inquire before, I think they will think there’s reason enough to inquire now.”
