Press Release

Theodore Howard Elected Co-Chair of Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs Board of Directors

November 22, 2011

Wiley Rein Insurance and Litigation partner Theodore A. Howard has been elected to serve a two-year term as co-chair of the Board of Directors of the Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs.

Mr. Howard and Wiley Rein have a longstanding relationship with the Lawyers' Committee, which focuses on mobilizing the resources of lawyers in private practice to address civil rights violations and poverty.  As part of its pro bono efforts, Wiley Rein frequently partners with the Committee to handle cases involving employment, housing and public accommodations.  Working with the Committee, Mr. Howard secured a significant victory on behalf of DC Jail inmates after overcrowding issues persisted for years in non-compliance with the inmate population cap imposed by the DC Jail Improvement Act of 2003. In 2006, Mr. Howard received the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia's 17th Annual Servant of Justice Award.

Mr. Howard counsels and represents domestic and international insurers and reinsurers in a broad range of coverage disputes and related litigation in state and federal courts.  He also has considerable experience in other forms of complex civil litigation.  Mr. Howard has been named one of "America's Leading Lawyers for Business" in Insurance by Chambers USA.

The Washington Lawyers' Committee has represented both individuals and groups seeking to vindicate their civil rights for 40 years.  It has handled thousands of civil rights cases involving employment, housing, public accommodations and other aspects of urban life. The Committee represents people with claims of discrimination based on race, gender, national origin, disability, age, religion and sexual orientation.
