Martha Marrapese Named 2018 ‘Energy & Environment Trailblazer’ by The National Law Journal

Washington, DC—Martha E. Marrapese, partner in Wiley Rein’s Environment & Safety and Consumer Product Regulation practices, has been recognized as one of the nation’s top “Energy & Environment Trailblazers” for 2018 by The National Law Journal (NLJ). Ms. Marrapese is among a select group of 28 honorees who made the list this year and were profiled by NLJ in its March 1 issue.

Ms. Marrapese was selected for the honor based on her work advising companies that use biotechnology and nanotechnology to make products regulated by the Toxic Control Substances Act (TSCA). An internationally recognized environmental law leader in emerging technologies, Ms. Marrapese has more than 25 years of extensive experience providing counsel related to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and associated regulatory needs for bio-based products and production platforms including yeast, algae, bacteria, and plants. Ms. Marrapese serves as outside general counsel to the Nanomanufacturing Association (NMA), and assists companies with new TSCA reporting obligations specific to manufacturing, importing or processing with existing nanomaterials. 

Ms. Marrapese joined Wiley Rein’s team of product regulation attorneys in February 2017 to blaze a new trail in TSCA counseling specifically designed to put her extensive experience with industrial manufacturers to work on behalf of downstream companies, including those that use or formulate industrial chemicals for use in consumer products. Ms. Marrapese further noted, “TSCA is no longer the exclusive domain of the manufacturer as EPA continues to put in place the complex changes made to this law in 2016, limits on specific chemicals and exposure information needs will affect companies all along the supply chain.”

To compile the list, NLJ reviewed hundreds of nominations and selected legal professionals who are “making a big difference.” This year’s honorees have “shown a deep passion and perseverance in pursuit of their mission, having achieved remarkable successes along the way,” said Richard Caruso, Vice President and General Manager of Legal Media at ALM Media, which publishes NLJ.
