Ted Howard’s Extraordinary Pro Bono Career Profiled in Washington Lawyer

June 7, 2018

Washington, DC—Wiley Rein LLP Pro Bono Partner Theodore A. Howard was featured in a June/July 2018 Washington Lawyer article focusing on the exceptional contributions he has made to the pro bono legal sector in the Washington, DC area over the course of his career.

In a Q&A interview with the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center’s Kathy Lugo, Mr. Howard talked about becoming Wiley Rein’s first full-time Pro Bono Partner in 2014; his volunteer work with the Pro Bono Center’s Consumer Law Resource Center and Advocacy & Justice Clinic; his mindset in approaching pro bono cases; the “access to justice gap” in the legal services community; and how he balances his workload.

“I just feel like I’ve been given this amazing opportunity, and there’s so much need for pro bono assistance in the District,” Mr.  Howard said in the interview. “Saying no has never been a particular strength of mine, so as long as there is someone to help whom I can help, that’s what I’ll be doing.”

Mr. Howard serves on the D.C. Bar Board of Governors, as well as the boards of several legal services organizations. He also received the prestigious Wiley A. Branton Award from the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs (WLC) in 2015, and has received numerous other recognitions for his outstanding work in defending the rights of those who cannot afford legal counsel.

In addition, he was appointed this week as Chair of the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants, for a one-year term.
