Wiley Rein’s Theodore Howard Elected to the D.C. Bar Board of Governors for Three-Year Term

June 8, 2016

Washington, DC—Wiley Rein Pro Bono Partner Theodore A. Howard was elected to the District of Columbia Bar’s Board of Governors for a three-year term, one of five appointments made to the Board, as announced earlier this month by the D.C. Bar after its annual elections were held. The D.C. Bar is governed by a Board of Governors composed of 20 lawyers selected by the active membership, and three members of the public appointed by the Board itself as nonvoting members. In addition to advising and assisting the President of the Bar with respect to policy matters, the Board of Governors also serves as the Board of Directors for the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center.

All newly elected officers, board members, and delegates to the D.C. Bar will take office during the 2016 Celebration of Leadership: The D.C. Bar Awards Dinner and Annual Meeting at 7 p.m. on June 15 at the Mayflower Hotel, 1127 Connecticut Avenue NW, Washington, DC.

Mr. Howard is Wiley Rein’s first full-time Pro Bono Partner, a position in which he oversees the firm’s pro bono activities and initiatives, and fosters relationships with the public interest legal services community. In 2015, he received the prestigious Wiley A. Branton Award for his exceptional pro bono efforts from the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs. Prior to his appointment as Pro Bono Partner in 2014, Mr. Howard’s practice focused on counseling and representing domestic and international insurers and reinsurers in a broad range of insurance coverage disputes and related litigation in state and federal courts. He also has considerable experience in other forms of complex civil litigation.

In 2015, Mr. Howard was named to two prominent committees that have national impact in the pro bono field. He was appointed by the Honorable Merrick B. Garland, Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit (and President Obama’s 2016 nominee to the Supreme Court of the United States), to the 12-member Standing Committee on Pro Bono Legal Services of the District of Columbia Circuit Judicial Conference. That same year, Mr. Howard was also appointed to the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants.
